Trezor Setup Guide

Complete these steps to initialize your new Trezor hardware wallet and ensure your cryptocurrencies are secure

Before You Begin

  • Your new Trezor device (Model One or Model T)
  • The USB cable that came with your device
  • A computer with internet connection
  • Approximately 15-20 minutes of uninterrupted time
  • A safe place to store your recovery seed

Connect Your Trezor Device

Connect your Trezor to your computer using the provided USB cable. If this is your first time connecting, your computer may need to install drivers. This process is automatic on most operating systems.

Compatibility Note

Trezor works with Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android devices. For Android, you'll need an OTG adapter to connect your Trezor.

Install Trezor Suite

Visit the official Trezor Suite website and download the application for your operating system. Trezor Suite is the recommended interface for managing your device and cryptocurrencies.

Alternatively, you can use the web-based version at suite.trezor.io, but the desktop application provides enhanced security and functionality.

Security Warning

Always download Trezor software from the official Trezor.io website. Avoid third-party sources to prevent phishing attacks.

Initialize Your Device

Open Trezor Suite and follow the on-screen instructions to set up your device. You'll be prompted to:

  • Install the latest firmware (this is critical for security)
  • Create a new wallet or recover an existing one
  • Set a PIN to protect your device from physical access

When setting your PIN, the numbers will appear randomized on your computer screen but in order on your Trezor device. This prevents keyloggers from capturing your PIN.

Backup Your Recovery Seed

This is the most critical step in securing your cryptocurrencies. Your recovery seed is a list of 12, 18, or 24 words that can restore access to your funds if your device is lost, stolen, or damaged.

Critical Security Information

Your recovery seed is the master key to your cryptocurrency. Anyone with access to these words can steal your funds. Never store them digitally, take photos, or type them on a computer.

Write down your recovery seed on the provided card or a dedicated metal backup device. Store it in a secure location like a safe or safety deposit box.

After writing down your seed, Trezor will ask you to confirm it by selecting the words in the correct order. This ensures you've recorded them accurately.

Name Your Device

Give your Trezor a recognizable name. This is helpful if you own multiple devices or share Trezor with family members.

The device name will appear when you connect your Trezor to Trezor Suite or other compatible wallets.

Start Using Your Trezor

Congratulations! Your Trezor is now set up and ready to use. You can:

  • Receive cryptocurrencies by generating receiving addresses
  • Send cryptocurrencies by verifying transactions on your device
  • Explore additional features like password manager or U2F authentication
  • Connect to third-party wallets and services

Transaction Security

Every time you send cryptocurrency, you must physically confirm the transaction on your Trezor device. This ensures that even if your computer is compromised, your funds remain secure.
